Announcement designed by Curator and Artist Grace Zuñiga
Monument to the Unattainable is a site-specific installation at TANK Space (Sawyer Yards' experimental project space) in Houston, Texas. The work, made of individually painted plaster cast stones, is viewable through a long, horizontal window that both distances the viewer and incorporates their reflection into the work. Within the space, a central structure is surrounded by invisibly suspended and fallen gypsum casts. Paused in the process of approaching and departing from the central construct, the stones are caught between destruction and resurrection, conception and creation. Through its visual entropy and defiance of gravity, the work depicts the moment of conceptualization when the ideal is still visible: the gap between ideation and reality. Navigating between the made and unmade, the real and unreal, the installation creates a physical space of impossibility. It is a monument for the unattainable, for those things imagined but never found
